To my soul mate

Well Joanne it’s been another one of those wakeful nights for you. It was great to be able to talk to you when I arrived at the hospital around 8:30 p.m. You said, as you usually do “where were you?’” I mentioned that I had gone to lunch with Terri who had come in from Windsor and four of my other “church” friends as you call them. I thought I should make room for any visitors during the day and only arrive after they had probably all gone. I told you I would be leaving shortly to spend a couple of hours with the Burke family to celebrate John and Heather’s 25th anniversary. You said “You’re coming back aren’t you?” So of course I came back to spend the night with you and to give Mike a chance to sleep. We had a few good chuckles as I was massaging your back around 3:00 a.m. I told you I would say a decade of the rosary that you would be free of pain soon and able to sleep. You came back with ”pray that Mike will stop snoring!” You never lose your sense of humour do you? Just to share with you that all the Burke, Knoepfli and Snider family send their love to you. Yes, they were all there in Lisa’s back yard and we reminisced about the good times we all had together when Dad, Anna and Bob were still with us. As you so often write to me on the cards I receive at special times “To my soul mate”. Yes we are soul mates – how many times when we have been driving somewhere together do we come out with the same thought that each of us was thinking. You know my tastes so well when you pick out clothes for me. They are always the right style or color. As I told you seven years ago when you were first diagnosed and I had just retired, God works in mysterious ways, I will be here for you to help you in any way I can. I hope I have fulfilled that promise and you know that I am only a call away day or night. I hope that tonight you will be able to sleep well and restfully my darling daughter. See you shortly.

Love, Mom
