Hey Mike and Jo
It's your cousin Greg from Toronto (trapped in Mississauga)
I wasn't very surprised to find so many loving messages and wishes from family and friends on the blog when I went to check it out. When I first heard about it I thought it would only be updates from Mike on Jo's condition but when I saw it I realized people were also including fond memories and stories about the both of you. This got me to thinking about my own memories of you guys. I thought wow there are so many!
I first met Jo when I lived at Markland (Markland Dr & Bloor St) . I thought she was great when I first met her. She made quite an impression on a 5 year old. When I was thinking of my memories of her I realized there was a funny one. This one time my brother and I were sleeping over at Mike and Jo's and Jo was going to get us subs for dinner. I couldn't make up my mind which one to get, and she kept trying to convince me to get a pizza sub, but I wasn't sure 'cause I hadn't tried one. Well she convinced me and well that was my first pizza sub and to this day is my favourite sub!
When I got a little older maybe 11 or 12 my mom told me that if anything ever happened to her or my dad that me and my brother were going to live with Mike and Jo, that they would be our guardians. Now not that I wanted my mom and dad to die but I thought it would be pretty cool to live with Mike and Jo.
For those of you out there who don't know, just about everyone in the Daquano family has lived at Lemonwood Drive (in Etobicoke) including myself. Before I moved there when my Poppa passed away, Lemonwood was the site of our family gatherings. Some of my fondest memories are of our holidays there with Mike and Jo, Auntie, Barbara and Jennifer, Uncle Ted, Auntie Bev, Kim and Tina and of course Nana and Poppa. The one holiday that sticks out the most (probably 'cause we have it on video courtesy of Mike and the fact that I was only six at the time) was Xmas 86'. The scenes I can clearly remember are my Poppa getting a TV from Uncle Ted and going "ohhh boy" and leaning back in his chair when he opened it, followed by Mike setting up the camera for dinner and Uncle Ted getting in the shot and the Mike proceeding to tell his dad to "get his ass out of the way" followed by Trivial Pursuit which played an early roll in my enhanced Daquano brain power. Of course during the game we hear Uncle Ted with his 'humbugs' telling Nana (his mom) not give the answers to the other team which she always did by mistake, he did this while calling her Buela (her name was Berna) and telling her not to 'give the damn game away!'
Because my mom Pam was the youngest of three all my cousin's are my much older than me, so as we all got older the gatherings got smaller and smaller because everyone had new families, so I guess that's why I cherish those old holidays so much because they were always so much fun, even for a little kid like me in a world of grownups.
I always really looked up to Mike cause he is so cool and larger than life. I remember wearing those old all star converse mixed match colors cause Mike did. I love working with video and I'm sure that's cause of mike and his video camera. He taped one of my baseball games when I was a kid and helped me film and edit a high school presentation. Mike always seemed to have a camcorder with him! He also took me and my brother Eric to a wicked triple feature drive-in, in his old yellow Sidekick jeep (I think it's the only car besides the Toyota with the DQ JR license plates). What made it wicked was that he had a system in his jeep that pretty much made it sound like we were at the movies but outside! people were gathering to watch the flick by our car. Did I mention that mike stopped for beer on the way? PS - Mike gave me a beer at that drive in and I was underage at the time.
Mike also used to trade us his Sega games, like 50 games for me and my brother's Nintendo and like 5 games for him. He always made it sound like he was getting the better deal, but that was 'the Dude' (did I mention that Dude was what my brother and I basically only called Mike? And this was years before The Big Lebowski!). Plus I think Mike had the biggest video collection I had ever seen on beta and VHS! I always watched Superman 1 and Iron Eagle when I went to their house.
Mike and Jo you guys are so great - I've really looked up to you in my life and you have given me so many happy memories and moments in my life and I'm sure there will be many more in the times to come. Sorry for going on so much but I hardly see you guys these days and I wanted to share my love and support with you both.
Get well soon Jo.
All my love
Greg
